During the years of the Second World War Ukraine was in the epicenter of the tough fighting. According to the calculations of the historians, in the course of military action on the territory of Ukraine nearly 3 million Soviet soldiers and officers and nearly 1.4 million prisoners of war died. On the occupied territory of Ukraine nearly 3.9 million people – every 6th inhabitant – died. More than 2 million Ukrainian were taken for forced labor to Germany. Over 700 cities and 28 thousand villages were completely or partly ruined, nearly 10 million people were left homeless, and more 16 thousand industrial enterprises were destroyed.
We give commemorate the memory of the warriors who died in the fightings for liberation of Ukraine and civilians who suffered from actions of the Nazi occupants. Ukraine will always remember those who with the cost of their lives defended and liberated it in the years of war trouble.
The memories of the horrors of the Nazi occupation were not gone from the memory of the Ukrainian people yet, as the part of the territory of Ukraine again appeared under the occupation of the foreign state. Once again with arms in the hands the Ukrainian people are forced to stand for the freedom, independence and territorial integrity of their Motherland. Blood flows again.
The cynicism of the present situation lays in that Russia came with arms to the Ukrainian soil, with the people of which and other nations of the former USSR Ukrainians were fighting shoulder to shoulder against Nazi invasion.
Having violated the basic principles of the international law, Budapest memorandum on the guarantees for Ukraine in consequence of the refusal from the nuclear weapons, one of the signatories to which is the Russian Federation, its regular forces occupied the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, invaded the East of Ukraine, giving support to terrorists, who uncovered real war against the Ukrainian State, and Ukrainian people. Thus, Russia followed the path of those opposed 70 years ago by the whole civilized world.
Today the aggressive policy of Russia is supported by the unprecedented high level of ultranationalist and chauvinistic mood of Russians, went out of the framework of the Ukrainian dimension and is perceived by the world community as a threat to the international peace and security.
Ukraine hopes that events of the 70 years past, as well as memory about millions of perished in the Second World War and thousands of victims of the present aggressive policy of the Russian power will force the present leadership of the Russian Federation to come to real steps which would promote withdrawal of troops from the occupied territories, cessation of fire, regulation of the situation in Donbass and Crimea on the basis of respect to the territorial integrity, sovereignty and inviolability of the internationally recognized borders of Ukraine.
