23 October 2024 18:32

The Ambassador of Ukraine to the Republic of Estonia, Maksym Kononenko, met with the Estonian Minister of Infrastructure, Vladimir Svelt. During the meeting, they discussed current issues of bilateral cooperation in the field of transport and infrastructure, particularly the restoration of Ukrainian infrastructure affected by Russian aggression.

The Ambassador thanked Estonia for its unwavering support of Ukraine in its fight against Russian invaders. He expressed special gratitude for Estonia's efforts in rebuilding the infrastructure of the Zhytomyr region, which Estonia has already begun even before the end of the active phase of the war. The Ambassador emphasized that Estonia has made a significant contribution to the restoration of critical infrastructure in the region, including the construction of a kindergarten in Ovruch, the reconstruction of a bridge in Malyn, and the construction of homes for large foster families. These projects carry not only a physical impact but also a symbolic one: they provide comfort to those who remain in Ukraine under daily shelling, create conditions for Ukrainians to return home, and offer hope for future prosperity. The Ukrainian side highly values Estonia's proactive role in this process.

There was also an emphasis on the importance of supporting energy resilience and the participation of both the public and private sectors of Estonia in the restoration of Ukraine's energy infrastructure. The transfer of key energy assets, including equipment from the Narva power plants, and support for ongoing projects in the energy sector are crucial steps toward ensuring a stable and sustainable energy future for Ukraine. Given the constant threats to Ukraine's energy infrastructure from Russia, this assistance is vital for how Ukraine and its citizens will endure the coming winter.

Maksym Kononenko presented a list of needs for further support of Ukraine's energy infrastructure and a request from the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine regarding the exchange of experience in energy sector innovations, restoration of critical infrastructure, ensuring cybersecurity, and the implementation of European directives. The Ukrainian side highlighted the importance of the Recovery Plan for Ukraine's maritime sector and the involvement of Ukrainian authorities in its implementation.

The Estonian side expressed its support for Ukraine in its fight for independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity and assured that it will continue to provide defense, financial, and humanitarian aid to Ukraine until its complete and final victory over the enemy. The restoration of Ukraine's energy and transport infrastructure, as well as its construction sector, and the support of the Ukrainian economy, will remain priorities for the current Estonian government. Minister V. Svelt emphasized the importance of incorporating innovations during the reconstruction process to ensure that it is technologically advanced and future-oriented. He affirmed Estonia's readiness to be a full partner in the search and implementation of such innovative solutions.
