Crimean Tatar Flag Day is celebrated in Ukraine on June 26.
This day in 1991, the second Kurultai of the Crimean Tatar people began its activities in Simferopol, which took place 74 years after the first Kurultai. The first Kurultai took place in 1918 in Bakhchisarai. At its first meeting the Kurultai of Crimean Tatars adopted the Crimean Tatar flag in 1917, immediately after the February Revolution. Renewed on June 30, 1991 after Ukraine's independence.
The Crimean Tatar flag is a blue banner with a yellow coat of arms (tamga) in the upper left corner. Blue - the traditional color of the Turkic peoples - is used on the flags of the Crimean Khanate. The coat of arms depicted on the flag - tarak-tamga (coat of arms-crest) is a family symbol of Gerai, the ruling dynasty of the Crimean Khanate.
With the beginning of Russia's occupation of the Ukrainian Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the intensification of repressions against the indigenous population of the peninsula, the main events of the Crimean Tatar Flag Day take place in mainland Ukraine (including Kyiv) by Crimean Tatar organizations with the support and coordination of the Crimean Tatar Mejlis. For several years in a row ceremonial events are organized with the slogan: "Two flags - one country."
